Mark Belanger

Mark Belanger returns to Flat Iron Cafe on Saturday, August 21, 2010 starting at 7:30 PM.

Fresh off of gigs at the Soule Homestead and the Eddy Homestead, Middleboro’s own Mark “Bellicose Bumpkin” Belanger is returning to Flat Iron Café with new material and new guitar techniques. When asked what he was planning for the evening, Belanger said: “I’ve been experimenting with claw hammer guitar and while I’m not quite there yet, I’ll be doing a few songs with a sort of hybrid claw hammer technique that gives a really interesting percussive sound.”

Belanger has been playing guitar in various rock bands since the late ’70s before steering towards Americana music in recent years including old time, bluegrass, and folk along with deep cuts from more tradition rock and pop offerings and original music. He will be playing  a mix of old time, bluegrass and folk as well as deep cuts from bands like The Beatles, Warren Zevon, Tom Waits, and a smattering of original music.

Join Mark and his growing flock of groupies at Flat Iron Café – located at 444 Centre Street in Middleboro – on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 7:30 to 10:30 PM for what’s sure to be a great night of great music, food and friends. And, as always, while you’re listening to some terrific bluegrass and folk music, you can enjoy Flat Iron’s famous pizza at half the usual cost.

Shaunough the Minstrel

Shawn Hickey – also known as Shaunough the Minstrel – calls Chelmsford, Massachusetts his birthplace but is no stranger to Middleboro and Plymouth County.

Shawn first became interested in music after hearing a music teacher play the piano. He mentioned this new interest in the piano to his parents who promptly went out and bought him accordion and accompanying accordion lessons. All perfectly logical if one is interested in learning the accordion but for Shawn it was the first step on his musical journeys. It wasn’t long after moving to Cape Cod area that the accordion went into the closet and friends introduced him to guitar playing. This is when the first glimmer of Shaunough the Minstrel was born.  From there, Shawn learned that his unique talents were a perfect fit in Irish pubs. Along with the traditional drinking songs, Shawn incorporates music from the 60s, 70s and 80s into his performances. Shawn has performed at a variety of venues across the state including: King Richard’s Faire in Carver, the Olde Hitching Post Restaurant and Tavern in Hanson and Blanchard’s Colonial Tavern in Avon. More information about Shawn Hickey can be found on his web site – http://shaunough.com/.

Hard Case

On Saturday, July 31, 2010 Hard Case brings you the great songs and the great bands, played just the way you remember! Hard Case is so good, they are scary.

Lead guitarist and vocalist, Michael Wexler has performed with Jimi Hendrix, Leon Russell, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Jeff Beck and many other superstars. He is also the founding member of the Left Banke. Bob Edgerly, drums and vocals for the group, has more gravel in his voice than what was taken out of the Big Dig. He is also a founding member of the Blues Mob. And last, but certainly not least, is Steve Straight playing bass and singing vocals. Formerly of Bedrock, Bees Deluxe and Impulse, he once stood behind Bill Walton at a Bruce Springsteen concert. Along with being the inventor of the rhythm-free “Electric Slide,” Steve claims to know some of the words to everything.

You can learn more about the band on their web site – www.hardcaserock.net – but can only experience them at Flat Iron Café on Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Along with the band bringing down the house on Saturday night, Flat Iron Café is offering half-price pizza from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Saturday. It simply doesn’t get any better than a Saturday night at Flat Iron Café. The entire crowd can eat, relax and enjoy some great music all without leaving Middleboro!

On Saturday, June 5, 2010 Flat Iron Café is happy to present Richy Jay Marcos!

Playing his self-taught style of music for more than 25 years, Richy hails from Cape Cod. He has traveled all over North America and Europe with the “Sleepy Labeef Band” and has also done a gigs and tours with other national acts along the way. Along with a handful of his own local bands, Richy plays drums, keyboards-piano and bass guitar but his primary focus is on guitars and vocals. He is the driving force behind the band, The Underground Cats, and has performed with other well-known acts like Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benetar and many others.

Marcos and The Underground Cats play a rock-heavy blend of rockabilly music. It’s a derivative of the style personified by Elvis Presley that defined the era between swing and the Beatles-led British invasion. “I have a dad, but I refer to Sleepy Labeef as my musical stepfather,” said Marcos. Marcos’s mom, a professional country singer, hooked up her teenage son with Labeef, who was looking for a drummer, before Richy had even started high school. Marcos’s first tour lasted nine months. Marcos has been on the road ever since, mostly as part of cover bands or supporting headlining musicians.

Join Richy and the rest of the Flat Iron gang on Saturday, June 5, 2010 from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm for a night of some terrific rockabilly and half-price pizza!
