Did you know that Middleboro has it’s very  own Ballroom Dance star? Flat Iron Café’s very own Marilyn “Lynn” Bernier DiCostanzo started Ballroom Dance lessons three years ago and quickly moved into the professional and amateur competitions.

Lynn started with American Style dancing but quickly became bored. Then she saw Greg Duda, an independent professional coach at a dance and asked him for lessons. It turns out that Greg is an International Ballroom Dancing instructor and he and Lynn have been competing – and winning – together for the past two years. Lynn has performed solo International and American style dances in several states with a variety of Ballroom Instructors and is a 10 dance competitor. In order to be a 10 dance competitor, you must be awarded 1st to 3rd place in competitions; quite an achievement for only two years of competition! Lynn often tells people she got into dancing for therapy. “Dancing is something everyone should try. It keeps you fit, is lots of fun and it is getting people out. It’s very social,” she says.

Greg Duda is a passionate performer and has been dancing for well over a decade.  His studies include both International and American Ballroom and Latin dances. He has been a major participant in ballroom dance competitions over the years in which he was able to capture many championship titles, which include: Eastern United States ten dance champion, New England Latin Champion, and he was a finalist in many other competitions throughout the United States.

Flat Iron Café will be sponsoring Ballroom Dancing lessons with Lynn and Greg. The lessons are scheduled for Thursday, April 15, 2010 – with two session times available. The first session time will be 8:00 PM to 8:45 PM and the second is 9:00 PM to 9:45 PM. No dance experience is necessary; just a sense of humor and the desire to have some fun!

The cost for each lesson is $10 per person; this is a $90 savings from the usual cost of a 60 minute ballroom dancing lesson with Greg. In order for everyone to learn from the best, Flat Iron Café is limiting the size of each class to 14 people (or 7 couples). If you would like to sign up for these classes, please contact Sherri at 774-213-1003, send an email to mail@flatironcafe.info or stop into the restaurant at 444 Centre Street and place your name on the sign-up sheet. Payment in advance is required in order to reserve your spot in our ballroom dancing class.

On a related note: Did you know that on April 24, 2010 the Oak Point Community is sponsoring a “Big Band” night to raise money for the non-profit Future of Middleboro Trust? The proceeds from this event go toward the implementation of “Project Lifesaver” in Middleboro, which you can find out more about at http://futureofmiddleboro.org/. Tickets for this event are $12 and can be purchased from Ed Beaulieu in Adam Bond’s law office located at 11 North Main Street in Middleboro. We can’t think of a better way to show off your new dancing skills than by signing up for Flat Iron Café’s ballroom dancing lessons and then dancing up a storm with the Westwood Swing Band to raise money for an excellent cause.

Flat Iron Café will be open to everyone until 10:00 PM Thursday, April 15, 2010. So, even if you’re not interested in participating in the lessons, come on in and have some fun watching the stars and the newbies. Our late-night appetizer menu will be available to everyone so that participants and onlookers alike can have something to eat and enjoy some fabulous dancing!
