In December 2009, the staff and management of Flat Iron Cafe were saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Reed, one of the owners of Farrar’s Ice Cream.
Harold C. “Harry” Reed, age 90 years, lifelong resident of Middleboro, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at the Golden Living Center, Oak Hill, Middleboro, after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Paula (Keough) Reed, who predeceased him in November of 1982.
Born in Lakeville, he was a son of the late Percy C. and Alice (Farrar) Reed. He was educated in Middleboro and graduated from Middleboro Memorial High School, Class of 1937. Harry and his brother David ran Farrars Ice Cream Shop, since 1946, which had been family owned and operated since 1898, and remained in the family for almost a century.
He was a lifetime member of the Church of Our Saviour, and a member of its vestry. Harry was president and co-owner of Farrars, Inc., one of Middleboros oldest businesses. He was a longtime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 2188, the American Legion No. 1264, and the Mitchell Memorial Club. He was a member of the Middleboro Historical Society and also an incorporator of the former Middleboro Savings Bank. He had served in the U.S. Army, during Wordl War II, serving with the 508th M.P. Battalion on detached services to the 3rd U.S. Army Headquarters. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by one sister, Emma Dunham of Lakeville; several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late David G. Reed, who predeceased him in 1996.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Dawn A. Reed Scholarship Fund, c/o Rockland Trust, 8 Station St., Middleboro, MA 02346.

Harry will be missed by his family, friends and all of us at Flat Iron Cafe. We will take care of the historic legacy that you left us here in the building where you once ran your popular ice cream shop.
On Saturday, December 19, 2009, Dr. Roger Haber did a live broadcast of his radio show on WVBF 1530AM, You Need To Know, from Flat Iron Cafe in Middleboro. Joining him was Middleboro’s own “God Squad”–several of the clergy from the Middleboro area. Dr. Haber and his guests talked about their favorite Christmas traditions and gave out lots of prizes to the program callers. A great time was had by all and we managed to capture some photographs of these illustrious folks from various congregations in town.

Matthew Moran
On Saturday, December 19, 2009 Matthew Moran is performing live at Flat Iron Cafe!
Matt Moran has been playing acoustic guitar for 20 years. A self-taught musician, he has mastered everything from the Beatles and Elvis Presley to crowd favorites like the Kingston Trio’s Charlie on the MTA. Matt performs at a variety of clubs across Southeastern Massachusetts either as a soloist or as the guitarist in the band, Blind Ambition.
Whether it is classic rock, acoustic sounds or crowd-raising favorites, Matt is one stellar, local performer you do not want to miss at Flat Iron Café! Join us from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Saturday, December 19, 2009 for some great music and lots of fun!
Christmas is turning into extravaganza at Flat Iron Café!
If you are having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year, then you have not been to Flat Iron Café this season! We are celebrating this holiday season in full force and this upcoming weekend is no exception.

Dr. Roger Haber, "You Need To Know" on WVBF-1530AM
On Saturday, December 19, 2009, Dr. Roger Haber will be doing a live broadcast of his radio show, You Need To Know from Flat Iron Cafe in Middleboro. He will be welcoming the “God Squad”–several of the clergy from the Middleboro area who will be talking about Christmas traditions. Dr. Haber and his guests will be on-air live from Flat Iron Cafe from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Everyone is invited to Flat Iron Café for breakfast with WVBF 1530 AM but if you can’t join us you can also listen to the show streaming on the internet at http://www.hometowntalkradio.com.

Have you been naughty or nice this year? At Flat Iron Cafe, it doesn’t matter because Santa Claus loves everyone! Santa is coming back this year and we cannot wait to give him our Christmas wish list! Join us on Sunday, December 20, 2009 from 10:00 AM to Noon for breakfast with Santa! He will be taking Christmas orders, talking to everyone and checking his list at least twice so you do not want to miss breakfast with Santa this year! Joining Santa this year is Middleboro’s own Kara Andrews from Art on the Spot. As one of Santa’s helpers, Art on the Spot will be doing face-painting for the young and old and whipping up some amazing balloon critters for everyone’s entertainment. After this whirlwind of activity, Flat Iron’s staff is going to need to take a bit of a break. We want everyone to enjoy the holidays with their family and friends so we are altering our hours slightly for the holiday season. Our holiday season schedule is as follows:
December 24, 2009: We are open from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM for breakfast and lunch. From 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM we will be open for pizza orders only. It will also be the perfect time to come in and pick up a last minute stocking stuffer (Flat Iron Cafe gift certificate, a Future of Middleborough Trust jigsaw puzzle or a lovely gift from Middleboro’s newest shop, Rose Candles).
December 25, 2009: Open from 7:00 AM to Noon, serving breakfast only.
December 31, 2009: Open from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM, serving breakfast only.
January 1, 2010 – Happy New Year! We will be open for breakfast only from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Also, starting January 1, 2010, Flat Iron Café will be closed on Mondays for the winter.

Starting on January 1, 2010, Flat Iron Cafe will be closed all day on Mondays. This change in schedule allows our staff to rest up from the wild weekends we have at the restaurant and get ready for the rest of the week.
The rest of our hours will not change. Our hours are as follows unless otherwise stated:
Monday: Closed
Tuesday through Friday: 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Saturday: 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
Sunday: 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Eric Simon
On Saturday, December 12, 2009 Eric Simon returns to Flat Iron Cafe! Eric is a singer-songwriter currently hypnotizing Greater Boston with a stunning blend of acoustic rock and pop. Coming from a musically inclined background, Eric learned at an early age how to play the piano, and taught himself how to play the guitar when he was just starting high school. Having no formal training in either instrument, Eric incorporates a tireless work ethic and an emotional edge into both his writing and his performances. Flat Iron Cafe Is Going International!
For one night only, Flat Iron Cafe is bringing a little bit of India and Nepal to Middleboro Center! We are bringing in Chef Umesh for a night of curry, chicken, lamb and much more! Some of the items that Chef Umesh is planning for Thursday, December 10th include:

You heard us right! Starting this week we are changing our half-price pizza nights! From now on, come in any Tuesday or Saturday night after 4:00 PM and you can get your favorite pizza for half the normal cost.
Love pepperoni? We’ve got that. Craving some linguica and peppers? Coming right up. All of your favorites are here just waiting for you to enjoy.
As with all good things in life, though, there are some rules:
- ~ One (1) pizza per person
- ~ No more than three (3) toppings
- ~ Eat-in only; special pricing not available on takeout pizza
- ~ Half-price pizza pricing does not apply to our specialty pizzas
